- I believe that coaching basketball is
synonymous with teaching sportsmanship and the head coach should be a
primary example of this concept.
- It is very important to build a high school program by working with
the up & coming young players from your feeder schools and keep them
involved with your program during the season and the off-season by
attending games, practices and skill workouts.
- It is very important that your players know the defenses, offensive
sets, plays and offenses inside and out. The only way to really
accomplish this is to require that the same offenses and defenses are
run at the freshman and junior varsity levels as well wit the same
terminology and rules.
- It is important that offensive skill improvement sessions are
conducted throughout the season as well as the off-season. It is also
very important that all of the participants in the feeder system are
involved in the same drills and skill development. Often middle school
and freshman level programs totally end when their season ends.
- It is important that weight training and conditioning sessions are
conducted throughout the season as well as the off-season. It is also
very important that all of the participants in the feeder system are
involved in the same drills and skill development. Often middle school
and freshman level programs totally end when their season ends.
- I believe that coaching basketball is teaching basketball as well.
Players are to use handout material and maintain notebooks to learn the
TEAM game as it should be played.
- I believe that coaching basketball and playing basketball is a
discipline. Players and coaches should be required to act, talk and
dress properly in class and on the court. I believe that kids really
want discipline in their lives and truly appreciate it when a authority
figure establishes distinct parameters.
- I don't believe in politics affecting a basketball team. Every player
should be treated fairly. Who a player is or who their parents are
should have absolutely no bearing on their basketball team status.
- I believe a bad shot is a bad shot and not just a missed shot. It is
very important that a coach actually has a philosophy and remains
consistent in his expectations.
- I believe that a player's school work is more important than
basketball. I also believe in monitoring a student-athlete's school
work and aiding the student in their quest for an education if possible.
- I believe that head coaches should try to establish good relationships
with feeder school coaches as well as help and encourage those coaches
to use the same principles that the varsity program has established.
- I believe that coaching basketball is a privilege and should be
combined with community service involvement.
- I believe that a player should feel like a member of the team long
after his eligibility has expired and not just like he was used and is
no longer welcome around the program. Alumni games, mailing lists are
great for establishing this kind of feeling.
- I believe that coaching basketball is teaching basketball and the use
of video tape is imperative to understanding what a player may have done
correctly and incorrectly. Often the coach's opinion of what happened
and the player's do not match. This method is conducive to real
understanding.
- I believe that scouting your opponent is very important. If the
opponent has distinctive strengths that you may be able to thwart then
it will be a tremendous aid to your player's efforts to win the game.
- I believe that coaching basketball is should be mixed with fun
activities that break that monotony of constant basketball practices and
games. Sometimes getting together for swimming, meals or playing other
types of games can be a relaxing and bonding experience for all that are
involved in the basketball program.
- I believe that "what gets measured, gets done"! Keeping statistics is
very important.
- I believe that the players should have appropriate playing and
practice gear.
- I believe that often coaches forget about how easy it is to lose your
legs if you practice too hard the day before or the day of a game.
- I believe that fast breaking is very important at every opportunity.
It creates easy baskets and the fans like that style of play.
- I believe that all five defenders should try to rebound the shot at
the defensive end of the floor and at least three or four people
crashing the offensive glass depending on the situation.
- I believe that other than a steal there is never a reason that the
other team should beat us back down the floor.
- I believe that every player should block-out around the basket and
every player should check-out if the are guarding a perimeter player.
- I believe that badgering the official has any place while you are
representing your school and community. This tradition of coaches
constantly trying to "con-vince" the official that they are receiving
unfair treatment is unfortunately far too common.
- I believe that is not more important than any other member of the
school's faculty or staff. Too often coaches require special treatment.
- I love basketball and I always have but, I don't feel that a youngster
on the team needs to be obsessed with basketball. It is recommended
that they are involved with the short and intense skill developing
sessions in the off-season but not mandatory.
- I do not endorse the philosophy that a youngster should only play
basketball as a sport in high school.
- I believe that when our team plays on the road then the locker room
that they afford us should be cleaner than it was when we walked into
it.
- I believe that the media should be made to feel welcome and
appreciated that they are promoting our team and sport for free.
- I believe that true team players attempt to set real screens and
picks. Often, players fake setting picks and screens because they don't
want their teammate to get open because they want to get open and shoot
the ball.
- I believe that it is a coaches responsibility to help promote a player
if he has potential gain a position on a college basketball and desires
to do so.
- I believe that having a "year around" strength and conditioning
program is essential to a high school basketball program's continuing
success. Lifting for an hour before school in the fall. After school
open gym sessions that include skill development as well as playing
games also aid in the development of the complete player.
