Michael Lee Saylor is currently
coaching at South Vigo High School in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Mike always loved basketball! During his
time in high school, Terre Haute South Vigo went to the "Final Four"
twice and the final eight twice. The South Vigo High School Basketball
team featured several all-state players. Mike had a dream to be a
successful basketball player and to coach someday, so he studied the
game diligently by studying basketball instructional videos, attending
clinics, working summer basketball camps, reading great basketball
books, attending college practices, discussing basketball techniques
with great coaches and players and he continued to work hard at
improving his own basketball skills.
In the fall of 1981, after having grown
to the height of 6'3" and gaining a lot of strength, ISU Coach Bill
Hodges asked Mike to join the Indiana State University Sycamore
Basketball Team. Mike played for two distinctly different coaching
philosophies while at ISU in that of former NCAA Division One "Coach of
the Year" Bill Hodges and Dave Schellhase. Bill Hodges featured a
"half-court with a structured offensive approach with man-to-man
defense" and Dave Schellhase was more of a "fast breaking, high powered
offensive approach with a multiple zone defensive approach."
Mike is married to wife, Patricia, and
has three daughters, Victoria Lynn (7), Sofia Marie (4), and Andrea Lee
(2).
